If you’re new to the world of composting toilets you will no doubt have lots of questions.
What is the lead time on a Simploo?
All our Simploos are made to order, as separator type, voltage and fan position differ depending on your requirements. Our expected turnaround time on a Simploo is approximately 5 weeks.
Where can a Simploo be used?
The Simploo can be used pretty much anywhere. In fact, it has even made quite a few appearances on several TV programmes featuring small spaces. The most common environments for the Simploo is boats, glamping sites, caravans, campers and RV’s, garden rooms, offices, cabins and sheds, allotments, golf courses, fisheries & camping and even in houses where a standard household toilet is not an option, due to plumbing restrictions.
How do I order a Simploo?
The best way to order is through our website.
How does it work?
A composting toilet is a type of waterless toilet that uses a predominantly aerobic process to treat human excreta by composting or managed aerobic decomposition. The Simploo is a waterless toilet, that includes a diverter separating the liquids from the solids. Our diverter (separator) is vacuum formed using a hygienic, robust, wipe clean, gloss plastic
What do I do with the urine?
In the Simploo, urine is separated from the dry waste. The urine is led off , either into a 6-litre bottle or a pipe which can infiltrate the ground, using a soak away.
What do I do with the poo (solid waste)?
We incorporate a 20l solids container in the Simploo, once full, the solid waste can then be emptied into an external compost bin where composting can continue. Also, we include a ‘vanity’ hatch which covers the contents of the solids container. Once fully composted, which can take between 9 months to a year, this can then be used in the garden. The solids container will need to be emptied every 20 to 30 uses, if toilet paper is added to the solids container, considerable longer if toilet paper is disposed of in a separate bin. A composting starter material can be added such as cocoa husks or even grass clippings can be added to the external compost bin that the solids are emptied into for further composting.
How long does composting take?
Composting takes time and your Simploo will fill up before it composts. Once full, the solid waste can then be emptied into an external compost bin where composting can continue.
Do I need the fan?
Yes, the Simploo has been designed to be used with a fan as it eliminates odours.
Does the fan need to be on all the time?
The fan draws 1.5 watts and we recommend running it fairly continuously. Saying that though, we switch ours off at night and leave it running during the day, and it works perfectly.
Can the fan run on a solar panel?
The fan can be powered by mains electricity, a battery or even rigged up to a small solar panel.
Do they smell?
Undoubtedly, much less that cassette or tank (pump-out) toilets. Due to the separation of urine and dry waste unpleasant latrine smells are eliminated. A simple and low-energy fan keeps the toilet free from damp, and assists with odour elimination. With Simploo’s incorporated fan you have no odour.
Is the Simploo leak proof?
Yes, we seal the base of all Simploos to prevent accidental leaks.
Can the Simploo be used in a wet room?
Yes, the Simploo can be used in a wet room environment, however it will need to be out of a direct stream of water as the fan is not waterproof. The fan will survive fine in a moist environment though and is sheltered from splashes by the fan housing and the toilet shell.
Can I use a Simploo in my van conversion?
Yes, the Simploo has been a popular choice for installation in camper vans, RV’s, Winnebago’s and even caravans.
Do you ship overseas?
Yes, we do. The Simploo is being used all over the world, from Greenland to Australia and all the countries in between.
Does the Simploo have an agitator?
No, the Simploo does not have an agitator. We don’t use an agitator/ crank as we recommend using liners in the solids container, for easy removal of solid waste. We also want to keep the Simploo as simple as possible. We have found that we don’t need to stir the waste.
How often do I need to empty the solids container?
The solids container will need to be emptied every 20 to 30 uses, if toilet paper is added to the solids container, considerable longer if toilet paper is disposed of in a separate bin.
Do I need to add sawdust?
The jury is still out on this one. Traditionally wood shavings or sawdust was used in compost toilets to firstly soak up urine and secondly act as a cover material to mask the smell. They do not promote composting. The Simploo is a urine separating loo so there is no need to soak up urine as this is diverted either to a bottle or externally to a soak-away or larger external container. Some of our users do prefer to use sawdust – if this is the case, it will do no harm to the Simploo. Some of our users make use of pet wood shavings as they are inexpensive and light.
Can the Simploo be fixed to the floor?
Yes, we provide pilot holes for floor securing screws.
Do I really need an active carbon filter?
No, an active carbon filter module can be used where it is not possible to vent to the outside. The active carbon filters out the bad smells. This unit will need replacing every 9 to 12 months. The unit can be sited further away from the loo and concealed if required.
How much power does the fan use?
The fan draws 1.5 watts
